Medical Weight Loss Clinic
*Due to medication shortages Dr Macklinshaw is not currently taking on new patients for The Medical Weight Loss Clinic. Please call the clinic if you would like to be placed on the wait list for when the clinic recommences, or would like to start working with Bre Elphick (Dietitian).*
Dr Kate Macklinshaw has now established a dedicated Medical Weight Loss Clinic at 21 Belmore Rd supported by dietitian Breanna Elphick, psychologists Katie Wood and Chris Brown.
If you would like to find out more about recent major advances in medical weight loss, please contact reception on 4933 2622 to book an appointment.
Please also complete the self-assessment form and either submit it online, or print a copy and bring it to your appointment.
Below is a summary of the clinic's approach to weight loss.
Let us help you overcome your programing
Body fat is an store of energy and fat soluble vitamins that is essential for health.
In western societies it is now normal to carry more body fat than is required for health. In those who are genetically predisposed, this can result in health problems such as diabetes and an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer.
The more we understand about the causes of excess body fat (loosely described as overweight and obesity). the more we have come to understand that most of us are programmed to accumulate excess body fat. This is different to most other bodily functions where we are programmed to maintain levels at an ideal set point, for example blood pressure.
In western countries we are programmed by our genetics and epigenetics, our family and culture, the manufactured foods engineered to maximise profits by causing overeating and addiction, the whole foods that have been selectively bred to be sweet and lacking in fibre, the signals from our microbiome (the bacteria in our gut) that have been altered by a reduction in the quantity and variety of fibre in our diet and exposure to antibiotics just to name a few.
We are also individually conditioned by our past experiences, our medical and mental health problems and the medications we take to treat them and of course our social and economic circumstances.
The end result is that yes we make choices, but these choices are largely predetermined by our history and our environment. As a result, weight loss is either impossible or unsustainable without changing our basic programming.
If as a result of your programming you have to make an enormous effort to lose or sustain weight loss, it is highly unlikely to be sustainable long term.
The goal of modern weight loss is to change your programming so that weight loss is easy and sustainable. This can be achieved by recognising and treating the many layers of programming that have occurred to contribute to you weight gain.
Please complete the questionnaire above to help us begin to identify where your programming comes from and collaborate with you to develop a plan to change it forever.
